TAR Stages 6 + 7

Turned from runner to supporter.

For stage 6 normal service was resumed, no course changes. Zernez to Scuol which meant and early depart for Anya on shuttle bus and then train to the start line.

After the decision to pull out I spent the first part of the morning in bed trying to recuperate and rest. Still very choked and breathing with some discomfort if I tried anything more than a fast walk.

Anya found it hard to feel motivated for today but got out there regardless with the intention of enjoying the day, maybe taking some pics along the way.

After a big day of 33km and 2100m elevation she came into Scuol still looking strong having had a bit of a mix of weather and some great trails.

Final stage from Scuol over to Reschensee.

Again, I sat this one out, reluctantly but under the realisation that I would struggle to get up and over the terrain and cover the distance.

I watched the start, though and cheered Anya off on this final day. The Host people who organised our accommodation gave me a lift to the finishing point and after checking in to the accommodation I made my way to the finish line to see the runners come in.

Anya smashed it again, 38km and about 2200m elevation followed by a disgusting flat 5km at the finish. Disgusting only because it’s so hard to maintain momentum, after all the climbing and descending, on flat tarmac or gravel. I have no pics of her finishing as I wanted to just enjoy the moment and be there at the finish. So proud. Seeing both Anya and Pauline complete this massive challenge with determination and resilience was heart warming and humbling.

I was able to see so many people we had met over the 7 days cross the line and although a privilege it was also hard to stay 100% positive given that I wasn’t able to complete it. I naively realised that I hadn’t considered I might not finish it so coming to terms with that while seeing everyone else enjoy their finish was  selfishly difficult.

The mood around the finish area was buoyant, full of laughter, smiles, conversations and stories of overcoming challenges and experiencing beauty.

The dinner that night was accessed via cable car at a mountain station. Food, drink, awards, photos and chatter followed by a chaotic return down the mountain - poor access for shuttle busses resulted in delays and large crowds pushing to get on 1 bus. A bit of an unfortunate climax to an incredible 7 days.

There may be more reflections to follow but that’s it for now. We’re off home! X
